Happy April Fool's, survivors!

Bermuda Banter

Love it, hate it. Devs are here to share their thoughts on the trending Free Fire topics.

 State of the Character System

Play as a world-famous celebrity, or as a high school girl with a harrowing past. The Character System is what makes Free Fire unique. Love it. Hate it. Welcome to Bermuda Banter.
Switching Character and Skills

I’ve lost count the number of times when a teammate of mine mistakenly brought Paloma’s skill into a CS match. We kicked him out of the squad after that. To change your skill set, one needs to head to the Character page now. Lots of tappings, really troublesome, and the reason why one may forget to change skills before switching game mode.

Skills are already independent of Characters now, surely there’s an easier way to view and select them. Devs sleep with this thought daily, sometimes waking in the middle of the night. Finally, we got enough resources to make it happen.

In the new patch, do expect a total Character System UI revamp. Easier viewing and quicker switching. Switching skills will be as easy as choosing a Loadout. Forgetting to swap skills will be a thing of the past. You just focus on your game, and we’ll take care of the rest!

Costs of Leveling

Just when you’ve collected enough Memory Fragments, the next tough decision awaits. Do I use Gold or Diamonds to level up Moco so that enemies are tagged for longer? Gold seems like a sensible choice. But I’m saving up for that Gold Royale outfit!

Believe us, some devs here in the studio face the same dilemma. Characters are a delightful addition to the game, and we want you all to enjoy them.

Beginning with the next patch, we’ll adjust the cost of leveling. The exact details are still in the works, as we try to keep everything balanced. Rest assured that you’ll definitely find yourself having more Gold and Diamond leftovers after the update.

Awakening Skills

When Kelly was awakened, she was given the title “the Swift”. Some say swift to forget, as her old skill was replaced with a new one. We like the look of Awakened Kelly, but Kelly’s old skill is really useful too! That means taking up 2 skill slots for this arrangement. Having your cake and eating it is impossible.

We debated about this internally, and came to two conclusions:
Awakening Characters are meant to allow players to upgrade their favorite characters. There shouldn’t be a tough decision after the hard work..
We want players to have as many cakes as they’d like.

So in the next patch, we will merge normal and awakened skills for Awakened Characters, taking up just 1 skill slot! Awakening is now truly awakened.
Skill Balancing

One issue which we have been paying attention to is Active Skills. Every new Character with an Active Skill is almost always highly anticipated. We are keen to learn about players’ feedback, and do follow community discussions closely.

Some big names (I’m sure we all know which few) have been causing more stir than others. Our design goal is always a fair and balanced gameplay, and we will start reworking most active-skill Characters beginning the next patch.

Worry not, this will not mean that your favorite Character may suddenly be weaker. We aim to rework skills so that there’s effective counterplay in any Character v.s. Character situation, without having to punish any one Character significantly.

Yes, some Passive Skills are also looking a little bit dated now. From the next patch onwards, we will also start renewing old Passive Skills. Be ready to take your older Characters out of their shelves, as we are confident that there’ll be a use for every one of them!

That’s all for the first Bermuda Banter. For a long time, we hope to jot down our thoughts, marketing and pr aside, just what’s on the devs’ minds. If you have anything to tell us, please flood the comments section, we’ll read!
